Pocahontas - creating a mixed media background

Can you tell that this layout holds two different acrylic medium? Three if you count the gesso in. I thought so, that it might not be obvious. The usual thing happened when I'm woking on a layout. I play with different mediums while doing the background and then an idea leads to another and when I have the layout finished, the background just peeks around the edges. But two great things - one, I love working just like this, allow myself some playtime with mediums and not to worry about the end result and two, this time I happened to record the steps, so you'll know what's underneath the papers!

The layout is made for Mixed Media Place's "How you use" challenge. The topic this time was acrylic paints. I usually use acrylic paints to create a background. From the series of photos below you can see how I used them this time. I usually like to draw with them using an old credit card or the use a brayer to smudge them to the page.

The layout is about my older girl, who refers to herself from time to time as Pocahontas. I was wondering some time ago why she likes to wear her shirt so that the other sleeve hungs free and reveals her shoulder. She then sighed and explained that that's how Pocahontas dresses herself. Yeah, silly mom.

Besides the great challenge, I was also inspired by the ever increasing amount of layouts with banner "strips" in them. I remember at least Wilna Furstenberg and Janna Werner making them. I used mainly paper scraps in mine, but added some washi tape and chipboard shapes, too.

Sivu on tehty Mixed Media Placen "How you use" -haasteeseen, jossa aiheena on tällä kertaa akryylimaalit.

Here's the steps I made to make that background. First of all I went to my trusty friend, the gesso bucket. I used a brayer to add the medium to the background.

Tässä on vaihe vaiheelta taustan synty. Ensimmäiseksi menin luottoystäväni, gessoämpärin, luo. Levitin maalin sivuun telalla.

A touch of color with more brayering. I misted a few puddles of TA mists to the gesso and then spread them around with the brayer.

Acrylic action! Using an old credit card I drew some lines to the background using two different colors.

Akryylimaalia kehiin! Piirtelin pohjaan muutamia linjoja käyttäen apuna vanhaa etukorttia.

More acrylic action! Using a ruling pen and acrylic ink I drew some scribbles to the page.

Lisää akryyliä! Piirtelin tuollasia viivasotkuja käyttäen pikku vetopiirrintä sekä akryylimustetta.

When I got into the drawing mode, I decided to add some more of it to the background with a different medium. This time I grabbed a pencil and drew some random circles.

The background looked too unicolored, so I made some white (and green) splashes and then added a touch of black by drawing through a stencil.

Tausta näytti liian yksiväriseltä, joten tein roiskeita valkoisella (ja vihreällä) sekä lisäsin hieman mustaa piirtämällä sablunan läpi.

The background need some more black, so I chose a few stamps and grabbed the Archival Ink and created some texture with those. I tend to cluster and layer the stamps.

Thank you for looking! Have a great Tuesday!

Mukavaa tiistaita!

Ihanat kerrokset tässä! On kiva nähdä vaihekuvia, miten työ on edistynyt. Ja kiitos muuten vielä tätäkin kautta hyvästä Suuresta Mixed Media-seikkailusta, sieltä sai paljon vinkkejä omaan tekemiseen, vaikka kaikkea ei heti kurssin aikana ehtinytkään kokeilemaan :)

Kiitokset!
